Modern Makeover Planned for Nelson Central Arcade

Pascoe Properties Ltd, part of the Thompson Property Group of companies, announces concept designs for a multi-stage upgrade to revitalise one of Nelson’s most established retail arcades.

Project Overview

Located between Trafalgar Street and Buxton SquareNelson Central Arcade has long served as a retail connection in the heart of Nelson’s city centre.
A new concept design, commissioned by Pascoe Properties Ltd — one of the nine companies within Thompson Property Group (TPG) — outlines plans to modernise the Arcade and create a brighter, more inviting experience for tenants and shoppers alike.

The proposed redevelopment will be completed in two stages, introducing improved entrances, upgraded materials, and greater accessibility — ensuring the Arcade continues to thrive as a key destination in Nelson’s retail landscape.

The Improvements

Stage 1 focuses on refreshing the Arcade’s street presence and internal finishes, including:

  • New frameless glass entrance doors and upgraded surfacing for both main entrances.
  • Raised awnings and modern ceiling and wall finishes to improve light and consistency.
  • Enhanced visibility from both Trafalgar Street and Buxton Square, strengthening pedestrian connection and retail appeal.

Stage 2 will further improve accessibility and circulation with:

  • new Farmers entrance, providing a stronger visual and physical link to the anchor tenancy.
  • Installation of a platform lift to improve upper-level access.
  • new staircase and balustrade system, increasing visibility and comfort within the Arcade.

Together, these upgrades will deliver a more cohesive, modern retail environment that reflects Nelson’s growing CBD vibrancy.

The Outcome

Once completed, the refurbishment will enhance the Arcade’s function, accessibility, and aesthetic appeal — benefitting both tenants and the wider community.
